Apophthegmata Patrum | Asceticism as a Vow to Seek God

By entering the desert, the early monastics essentially took a vow to reject worldly comfort in order to seek God. To indulge in any of these comforts would be to “go back” and reject their vow. I believe this is a primary reason why there is so much emphasis placed on rejecting the “comforts of the flesh” in the writings of the Desert Fathers.
